The planetary ball mill is an essential device for mixing, fine grinding, sample preparation, nanomaterial dispersion, new product development and small batch production of high-tech materials. It uses the rotation to drive the grinding ball to impact, squeeze and rub the sample to do the sample-processing. In general, the higher the rotational speed of the planetary ball mill, the greater the kinetic energy given to the grinding ball in the tank.
Is the higher the rotational speed of laboratory planetary ball mill, the better? The high-speed planetary ball mill can give the grinding balls higher grinding energy, and make the sample to be crushed and ground more easily. However, it does not mean that the higher the rotational speed of planetary ball mill, the better, instead, it should have an upper limit. Once the rotation speed exceeds this limit, the grinding effect and efficiency will not be better, which means going beyond the limit is as bad as falling short. This is because when the rotation speed of the ball mill tank is too high, the grinding balls will spiral upward along the inner wall of the ball mill tank due to centrifugal action, which will reduce the impact on the sample and greatly destroy the grinding effect of the sample.
Then what is the upper limit of this speed? This is uncertain, because the volume of the ball mill tank, the loading of grinding balls and samples all affect this value. According to past experience, the upper limit should be between 800 and 1000rpm. Therefore, it is not necessary to pursue the high speed of vertical planetary ball mill too much, and it should be set according to the specific grinding conditions.
